Volkswagen 1600S South Africa

Volkswagen standard beetle 1600S South Africa
Curve windscreen, full dashboared, roystle 5 forksmetal rims, pop up back windows, golf original seat, kin pin axles suspension, limited units produced. original black bumpers, Spare tyre upright position.
1600s beetle produced in South Africa from 1976 to 1978 uses elements from both the standard 1200 model and 1303 Super Beetle in its construction and is not a Super Beetle.
South Africa celebrates 25 years Beetle production, Silver Bug, similar features VW 1600L only 216 cars sold through out the world. There is no record of no. of VW 1600S being sold but is estimated lesser.

I owned one daily drive 1970 model standard beetle from 1989 til 2004 beforeI traded for this unique South African made 1600S. It was introduced by a my friend.

I was hestitated and confused on my first encounter, a curve wind screen with standard body shell, full size dashboard, upright spare tyres, rostyles GT 5 fork metal rims. Old model king pins axle. Volks Golf original seats. pop up rear window panels. 1.6 engine.

The engine number and the chassis number matched the registeration card but it was not printed in the normal place but is stamped printed on the body beneath the front bonnet where the upright spare tyre is seated. The engine number is printed in original condition.

This 1600S was registered in Malaysia in 1981 and was given second layer of light blue color paint.

I was convinced that this is the original standard beetle made in South Africa in 1976 that is a combination of standard beetle and 1303 after verified with superbeetle website.

The restoration started by stripping off the old paint to bare metal. Body work was redone to tip top condition before it was given several layers of primer and a solid off beigh color.
Engine was removed and was given a top overhauled. Engine was fitted with minimum accessories. Aircondition was fitted.
Door panels front bonnets and body shell are not competible to neither standard bettle nor Super Beetle model. So perfect body work need skillful mechanics.
The interior was upholstered with two tones of brown.
It had gone through 5 workshops before the last screw was fitted in October 2006.

This 1600S was registered on 31st October 1981 on Malaysian road. It is registered as 1976 model and maintained the original engine no SFAS 440841 and chassis no 1172059586, 1584 CC. originally blue in color.

Powerful original 1600 CC engine, decorated with billet accessories.
